           Awful Yet Not Awful Dad (1)

            Wei Mingyan slowly walked out of the gate in his dilapidated clothes. His hair was messy, but it did not diminish his handsome appearance one bit. He turned and glanced at the prison gate one last time, before walking away without turning back.

             Wei Mingyan took a glimpse at the general outline of the world. It was a very abusive story. Its main content was all about the misfortune of the female lead who became his daughter in this world.

             Qiao Panpan, the female lead, was born at a small mountain village. Qiao Panpan was only one year old when his father, Qiao Cheng Qing, who wanted to do business, left and never came back. (TL: There's something wrong here. You'll know if you read ahead.)

             Everyone said that this man had abandoned his wife and child. Around that time, the hardship of a woman raising a child single-handedly was not something anyone could easily imagine.

             Despite the pressure, Qiao Panpan's mother persevered and insisted to not remarry. She stubbornly raised Qiao Panpan by herself. Then, as time passed, Qiao Panpan grew up beautifully which was supposed to be a good thing. However, she was coveted by many, powerless to do anything due to her poor family and weak mother.

            Even so, she refused those people who wanted to support her and chose to be self-reliant. She got herself a part-time job when she was still a freshman. Then one time, she got harassed and forced to drink by a guest during her working hours. Qiao Panpan got drunk and ran into a group of rich second-generation students. She got toyed fervently for one night by one of the students who assumed that she bumped into him deliberately.

             Qiao Panpan was only a girl with no one to depend on. Her mother got confined into a hospital and she couldn't call the police. Her naked photo fell into that student's hands. Finally, when her mother became seriously ill and a huge amount of money for operating expenses had been needed, she swallowed her pride and became his secret lover.

             After a series of events, the still-undergraduate Qiao Panpan was forced to drop out of school due to her pregnancy. She had to marry that man after getting threatened that he would dispose of her mother if she rejected.

             Living under his roof all her life, raising his child.

             A typical sadomasochistic affair.
           
             After reading the plot, Wei Mingyan recalled this body's memories. He managed to get admitted to junior high school due to his sharp mind. He met the beautiful and gentle woman named Qi Ya and had a little daughter. When he found out that his unborn girl was harmed in the womb and would not recover, he swindled his family's (His and Qi Ya's) savings from Qi Ya using his sweet speech and honeyed words. Then, he abandoned his wife and child and went to Hong Kong, planning to make it big. Of course, he had no intention to come back.

(TL: this is what I'm talking about: 一岁时 means one year old and 生 means unborn. On the earlier paragraph, she was abandoned by her father when she's already one year old and the latter means that she's still unborn when it happened. I hope anyone can help me with this)

           Just a few years after his venture, he was deceived and robbed of his money. Then, he lost control over his emotions and got himself into a big fight. That time, punishments could be extremely heavy. A mere brawl delivered him a sentence of ten years behind the bars.

          Wei Mingyan glossed over the original's memories and narrowed his eyes, pondering.

          To become a good father, this body's experience is not a good example to follow.

             A few years later.

             Qiao Panpan walked into the dormitory room and there, a young girl could be seen eating a cake. Watching her enter the room, the girl immediately covered the cake with a lid as if afraid that her cake will be snatched away.

             Qiao Panpan had been used to this ever since. This is her roommate, Zhu Yun. Like usual, this girl despised her due to her crude appearance. Starting from their first meeting, this girl always acted really nervous around her as if she would steal her things. More so, she bought a lock to seal her cabinet securely underneath her bed.

             But in fact, Qiao Panpan is always dressed neatly. Only her trousers, due to excessive washing, turned a little whiter, nothing more.

             Now, seeing Zhu Yun hide her cake within the cupboard and walk out of the room, she didn't put it to mind and took out a book and began to read it.

             "Don't pay her any attention, Panpan. She's just intentionally putting on that look to disgust you. I already asked around. On Zhu Yun's first day here, her boyfriend snuck glances at you a few times. She's basically jealous of your good looks!"

             Lu Lin, her other roommate couldn't help but comfort Qiao Panpan.

             "It's alright, she only glared at me." Qiao Panpan looked up and smiled at her roommate. "I'm already used to it."

             "Well, that's good, Panpan. Summer vacation is already near. Any good part-time job yet?"

             Everyone in the dormitory knows that Qiao Panpan's family is poor. When there's no class, she usually takes advantage of it to work part-time, not to mention a summer vacation.

             Lu Lin admires Qiao Panpan. Despite her poor family circumstances, she doesn't want to live off of her looks. If she had been in Qiao Panpan's position and had a beautiful face like that, she would not be able to resist the allure of money.
           "I already submitted my resume online. I have an interview tomorrow." Qiao Panpan is planning to take a part-time job on summer vacation. During summer vacation, she intended to make some money in order to buy her mother a better medicine since the current one is now ineffective.

             Thinking of her mother whose health has not improved at all, a flash of sorrow crossed her eyes. Lu Lin did not manage to catch it but she kindly suggested. "I found a particularly good part-time job. There's no need to mention the salary. The things you'll learn there are good too. It’s a big company so there's no need to be afraid of getting scammed."

             Holding her notebook, she pointed at the information on it to Qiao Panpan and added, "Look, it’s Nan Ya Company, a big company. I heard that its market valuation is more than a billion. This company is very popular. I already asked around, they are currently recruiting students who want to work this summer vacation. I have already signed up. Panpan, you'll come with me, right?"

             Qiao Panpan glanced at the high-rise buildings in the picture with some hesitation. "But we're only freshmen. This kind of company, they must be recruiting juniors, no?
             "Ah, what are you afraid of? We're only signing up. There's nothing to lose. Come on, come on. In case we got in, the monthly salary is big, ah." (Tl: 啊 a, modal particle ending a sentence, showing affirmation, approval, or consent.)

             The beautiful girl stared at the part showing the monthly salary and thought of her mother at home who needed money to buy medicine. She no longer hesitated. "Okay, I'll sign up as well."

             Anyways, it's like what Lu Lin said. Accepted or not, there's nothing to lose.

             "Great! In case we got in, let's go to Nan Ya together and have a look." Lu Lin smiled happily.

             Zhu Yun, who happened to come back at that time, rolled her eyes when she heard this. "Come on. Why should a big company like Nan Ya accept both of you?"

             Lu Lin's happy mood immediately sank, and she snorted, "Better try than be like some people idling at home."

             "Oh, my mistake, besides eating at home, you're eating your boyfriend, aren't you? Am I right, Panpan?'' (Tl: mah brain just turned offline at this. The literal translation here is this, ''You say, Panpan?'' Please help!)

            "You!"

             Poked at her weak spot, Zhu Yun immediately grew angry. "The likes of you entering Nan Ya, what a pipe dream, ba?"

             Watching the other get mad, Lu Lin winked at Qiao Panpan proudly. "Don't worry about her. She's only good at yelling. The next time you see her, ignore her."

             Qiao Panpan nodded quietly. In fact, she didn't want to turn away, but all the past years and experiences made her subconsciously weigh out what could bring more gains.

             After all, she can only rely on herself.

             Qiao Panpan had no classes in the afternoon. After reading a book for a while, she went to her part-time job. She ended up very tired, but at least, the hourly salary is high. At seven o'clock in the evening, she rushed back to the dormitory, ordered a bowl of soup and a steamed bun, and began to review her notes.

              After working around the clock, only at past ten did she wash up and go to bed. Even so, she still couldn't fall asleep. She kept on thinking about her mother's medical expenses, creating creases between her brows.

             If this part-time job is not good, she would have no choice but to work in a bar. Qiao Panpan knew a place like that is dangerous, but her mother's illness is like a knife hanging over her head. She must do her best and make money as soon as possible.

             Early in the morning, the girl who couldn't sleep at all last night finally managed to sleep soundly. But then, Lu Lin's excited voice rang beside her ear. “Panpan! Panpan! We're accepted! Nan Ya called us for an interview."

             "I checked and confirmed that if they call you for an interview, it's the same as getting accepted."

             Qiao Panpan opened her eyes quickly; her face was full of undisguised happiness. "Really?"

             "Really, Really! We are told to report at ten o'clock in the morning. Get up and tidy yourself up!"

             She is aware of their shortcomings and given their qualifications, their already low chances once again get lowered. So Lu Lin did not expect such a thing to happen to them. After waking Qiao Panpan up, she excitedly went to find the right clothes to wear. Only Qiao Panpan remained sitting on the bed, her eyes full of hope.

             If she gets admitted into Nan Ya, the salary she'd gain in two months would be enough to support the cost of her mother's medicine for a period of time.

             Two young girls washed up and changed their clothes. Before nine o'clock, they had already left their dormitory and went to Nan Ya Company.

             Nan Ya Company is the largest company in the city. The high-rise building used as office is an absolutely magnificent sight. Looking upon it from below, Qiao Panpan and Lu Lin eyes glistened with hope for the future.

             "What a big place! And it looks so grand. How I wish I could go back here after this and stay here longer."

             Only when they entered inside did they realize that there are more than 20 students for the interview. They've all been basically recruited to do some chores. Most of them are junior students about to graduate.

              Lu Lin sat beside Qiao Panpan and whispered, "I heard that one of the interviewers is the CEO. He's the big boss. It's said that he's only in his early forties, very young!"

             Qiao Panpan nodded. The interview is done five-person at a time. Soon their group was called in.

             She entered a room with a large round table. The table is encircled by several people, and at the center sat a handsome man with a good temperament, sporting a gentle gaze behind his gold-rimmed glasses.

             Wei Mingyan watched as a beautiful girl reservedly came in.  His eyes flashed when he turned his head to the people around him.

             "Are there some management students here?"

            "Yes. The two at the left are, but they're only freshmen."

             "It's all right." The man gently pushed his glasses up and whispered, "Assistant Liu will be back in two months. It's just for a while, no need to be so demanding."

             They are the last batch of interviewees. After the interview, Lu Lin pulled Qiao Panpan outside and tensely patted her chest. "Ah! I got so nervous; I thought I'm going to die."

              After stating this, she got excited again. "Qiao Panpan, did you see? That handsome and graceful man sitting in the middle is the CEO. He built such a big company from scratch. Imagine such a legend, I tell you what..."

             Qiao Panpan was also a little tense. She listened to Lu Lin and walked towards the end of the corridor. A man came over with a stack of documents in his arms. The girl unconsciously wanted to avoid but fell down.

             Oh no!

             Only one thing flashed in Qiao Panpan's mind.

             She's wearing a skirt today!

             "Panpan!"

             To Lu Lin's bewilderment, the girl was held steady behind by a handsome man. When he saw her finally rescued, Wei Mingyan took his hand back gently. He looked at Qiao Panpan and warmly said.

           "Be careful next time."

             "....Thank you."

             Lu Lin rushed up to help Qiao Panpan who's still standing there in a trance. The handsome man smiled, nodding at her before leaving.

             Looking at his tall back, Lu Lin's eyes sparkled. "Chief Wei is kind."

             "Chief Wei is only kind to girls your age." The employee who just bumped into Qiao Panpan apologized and began to pick up the documents on the ground. He heard Lu Lin's words and couldn't help but comment.

            "Ah? Why?" Lu Lin lost the glimmer in her eyes and asked in shock, "Is he a pervert, ah? And to young girls!?"

            When this idea flashed in Lu Lin's mind, the handsome man's heroic image suddenly vanished.

           Qiao Panpan also frowned and looked over. Wei Mingyan's gaze is very gentle and didn't bear any ill motives. She is really sure of this.

           "No." The employee stood up with the papers in his arms and explained, "Mr. Wei has a daughter that died young who should be the same age as you. That's why he is so kind and considerate toward young girls. It's like he's seeing his daughter in them."

           "Ah... What a pity..."

           Hearing Lu Lin's voice beside her, Qiao Panpan also felt somehow upset. Aside from this, she's also sympathetic towards Wei Mingyan's loss. It is kind of complicated.

           Both are fathers, but why is one full of love for his wife and daughter, while the other easily abandoned his?
